The Pop Machine Band
August 10 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Indefatigable and prolific, Burlington Ontario-based Renaissance man Mike Shotton is a human dynamo! With an almost impossibly wide vocal range, he plays, sings, and entertains. He also writes, engineers, and produces. His friends and family say, “It doesn’t do Mike justice to simply say he’s versatile, or eclectic. He’s possessed by an inexhaustible, energetic spirit.”
Born in Newcastle, England, Michael Shotton loved music from the moment he discovered The Beatles. Beginning at the ripe old age of three, Michael accumulated years of experience playing drums (southpaw!), and eventually singing in countless original, top-40 and specialty acts. In 1988, Michael signed to Herb Alpert’s label, A&M, with the pop-based group “Diamond Life” (their hit “Habits of the Heart” still gets play on Canadian AOR radio), thereby launching one of the most diverse, storied careers that could possibly be imagined.
In ’91, after replacing Brad Delp to appear on Boston’s fifth album, “Walk On” (MCA), he turned down the lead vocal position with the legendary pop-rock band, to sign to EMI records worldwide with his own original hard rock band, “Von Groove”. To date, Von Groove has completed their ninth album under the Z Records/Marquee labels. In ’98, Michael also became part of the rock group “The Outpatience”, releasing their debut album, “Anxious Disease” (Teichiku/Virgin). This album features all of the members of Guns N’ Roses (including a duet with Axl Rose), Steve Stevens (Billy Idol), Louis Conte (Phil Collins), and many other A-list session players.
In 2001 he independently wrote, produced and released a 911 fund-raiser track entitled, “The Heart of America”, which is currently part of a compilation album alongside the likes of Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen. In the summer of ’07, Michael had the honor of writing and co-producing “I Believe”, the new theme for the annual Canadian Special Olympics, a song that captures the spirit of the games and its competitors. Michael also found time to develop his own TV show for pre-schoolers, called “Mike’s Garage”, featuring a kaleidoscope of songs, characters and adapted for television with support from Bob McGrath of “Sesame Street” himself!
In recent years Michael has also been playing drums with the well-known Canadian band The Spoons, as well as performing as a solo vocalist on symphony dates all across North America with Jeans ‘n Classics – all the while providing the voice behind many radio and television commercials, such as Coke, Labatts, Coors, Crunchie, Fosters, The Bay, and many more.
Michael also teamed up with Gordon Deppe (The Spoons) and Tom Lewis (Partland Brothers, Alan Frew) to form the pop-rock band “5 STAR FALL”. The debut record “Automatic Ordinary” is available through www.myspace.com and www.thespoons.com. Michael additionally joined forces with Canadian Hall of Fame icon Rik Emmett, playing, co-producing, and co-writing the melodic hard rock of “AIRTIME”. Their debut album “Liberty Manifesto” is available internationally under the Marquee/Escape labels, at Maplemusic.com and www.rikemmett.com
His charismatic stage presence, and astonishing appetite and lust for life all shine through in the multitude of things Michael Shotton does.
